We wandered down to the Capilano River on the weekend. Thomas likes exploring in the forest, especially if there are creeks to play in … Thomas’s parents appreciate the low light in the trees.
(PS … this picture is great for your computer desktop.)

Thomas and Mariela went to the Terry Fox Run in Port Coquitlam, Terry Fox’s hometown, today. Also there were the Prime Minister, the Premier, the Mayor, Rick Hanson and Terry Fox’s parents. It was a great event, and Thomas saw a fire truck, lots of dogs and kids and made new friends as he applauded and exlaimed “Yay!” at all the right times in the speeches. He was particularly fond of watching everyone join in for the National Anthem. We were just a few feet away from the Prime Minister as he raised the Terry Fox flag just before the start of the run. All gave moving speeches, and Terry’s mother had an inspirational message filled with hope and humour.

For those keeping track, the latest on the word front is:
Nana = banana, YEEAH! = yes, pa = pants, duh = duck, hah duh = hot dog

Now that we are into the fall term, Thomas has been enjoying his apple cinnamon oatmeal again this week. He is particularly good with his new “spork” (half spoon, half fork), and enjoys dropping little scoopfuls to Kahlie. Thomas also discovered hot chocolate this week, a nice cozy treat for the little guy fighting his first cold of the season.

With all of the great photographers in the family, this link may be unnecessary … but, the author of Digital Photography Pocket Guide has a useful and interesting list of 10 tricks and tips that will help me improve my digital photographs.
(And some of the tips are relevant for film cameras too.)

For those of you who can stand it, we posted a few more pictures of Thomas on Savary Island. (They are scans of slides and there is a lag in processing time.)
And, since Rob and I were probably taking pictures of herons at the exact same time on opposite coasts and different oceans, check out this picture of a Savary Island heron. (Rob’s heron is here.) Nice lighting, Rob!

Most of our meals were prepared on our Fritz stove - made in Iskut by Fritz himself. We had trouble with our 2 burner stove, but the Fritz came through for us.
The Fritz stove is an engineering marvel … it burns hot on small amounts of wood — no other fuel required.
We made halibut with mango salsa, steak, smores, bacon and eggs and, of course, coffee.
(For a close up of the stove, click here.)

Thomas loved the beaches on Savary Island. This place is great … endless beaches surround the small island … they are full of tidal pool creatures. The island itself is very rustic. There are very few amenities but lots of peace and quiet.

We went camping this week to the BC Sunshine Coast. We camped for two nights in campgrounds near Powell River. And, we spent a great day on a nifty Gulf Island called Savary. Savary Island has amazing beaches.
Our complete ‘best shots’ travel album is here. (There are additional comments with many of the pictures.)
Or, you can see adventure highlights from the trip in subsequent posts.
Note: I have posted a Google Earth image of the Sunshine Coast in relation to Vancouver and Vancouver Island.

KahlieAndMadison
Originally uploaded by Thomas Miguel.
Last summer, on a trip to Horseshoe Bay for fish and chips at Troll’s, we met a dog that reminded us so much of Kahlie that we stopped to talk to the owner. By amazing coincidence, we discovered that Madison was one of Kahlie’s puppies that had been at the SPCA when we adopted her. An even greater coincidence happened on our trip back to Horseshoe Bay this week to catch the ferry - there was Madison again! This time, Kahlie was with us so we were able to reunite her with her long lost pup. Both share the same buttery-softness, and they happily sat next to each other for this photo.
