Varley Trail

I ran on a new trail today. The Varley Trail runs on the east side of Lynn Creek. Access from the Seymour Conservation Reserve parking lot is easy … a short trip across a neat bridge over a high canyon. Then, the trail descends close to the creek. The boardwalks are great. From them, you get a nice view down into skunk cabbage-filled swamps. The old cedar stumps are particularly large here too. Return to Seymour is view the Lynn Headwaters-Rice Lake Connector.

Visitors should remind me to take them to the Varley Trail.

New Park Exploration

We are poking around the trails of Lynn Headwaters Regional Park these days.  This is the area above Lynn Canyon along Lynn Creek. The trails are wide and easily passable … good for short legs. There are the usual enormous stumps and we spotted the frame of an old truck (solid rubber tires) with sizable trees growing inside of it. We now need to explore the trail connections between the Seymour Reserve and Lynn Headwaters. We’ll keep you posted.

Not Seen (Or Found)

An early morning trip over to Commercial Drive in East Van to pick up an Argentina soccer jersey for Thomas proved futile. There’s a lot of Italy over there, but no Argentina. We’ll start looking in some of the general sports clothing stores around town. The World Cup is days away …

Sightings

A coyote … at KM 3 on the Seymour Trailway.

‘Upland’ coyotes are much better looking than their Stanley Park cousins. This coyote was large, solid, and with a full coat. Seeing it certainly puts a face to the scat along the trail.

Dry Rub for Chicken

Here’s a keeper …

Mix together:

  • 1 tablespoon fresh garlic, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon rosemary
  • 1 tablespoon thyme
  • 1 tablespoon parsley
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • 1 tablespoon sage
  • 1 teaspoon ground coridander
  • 2 teaspoons salt

Rub on a whole chicken. Roast or rotisserie until done.

Capilano Hatchery Update

Thomas and I stopped by the Capilano Fish Hatchery today.  The water levels are extremely high in the river downstream from the Cleveland Dam.  The river’s course is ‘fuller’ than it has been in at least a year.

And, the first fish of the season is in the fish ladder.  A lone steelhead … of good size … was swimming in the second step of the ladder.

Disposing of Garbage Pails

We replaced our two garbage pails last fall after living for months with them full of holes.  Animals had chewed through the lids to get at our left-overs.  Never sure of how to convince the garbage collectors that the garbage pails were actually garbage too, the pails sat in the yard collecting mold.

Now with the reno complete, the contractor was hauling loads of debris to the dump.  I figured I would add the two old pails to the top of the reno garbage and get rid of them that way.  No go!  Twice I piled the pails on the piles of reno trash, only to come home and find that the chewed up pails were placed carefully by the side of the house.

How do you throw away garbage pails?
