Springtime

Cowichan Sweater

Thomas and I were working in the yard today. He is finally growing into his Cowichan sweater and it is perfect for work around the house.

Note, too, the daffodils coming up beside Thomas.

Happy Spring …

Wind Damage

I was out for a run on a couple of favourite trails this week. I got a close up view of the wind damage in places other than Stanley Park. Along MacKay Creek, south of Highway 1, there are broken and bent trees strewn all along the valley floor. As the running trail rises and falls on the sides of the valley, I noticed a number of view points which were unavailable in the past.

In the Seymour Demonstration Forest, broken trees line the trailway and the forested trails in significant numbers. in one 500m stretch of trailway, at least 30 trees had fallen. Crews have been working to cut up the trees.

The wind storm was truly remarkable and the mess it created is equally stunning. I find myself more in awe of the force of the wind than sad about the fallen trees.

Sick and Tired

[Scene: On the road near Cap College. Daycare is close by. Thomas is in his car seat, in the back of the CR-V. Papa is driving, from the driver's side front seat. Fog.]

Thomas: I’m stick.
Papa: Do you mean you are sick?
Thomas: Yes. [Pause, 2s.] And tired.
Papa: You are sick and tired?
Thomas: Yes. Sick and tired.
Papa: You know, Thomas, sick and tired is an expression that is usually followed by a description of what you are sick and tired of.
Thomas: I’m sick and tired.
Papa: Of?
Thomas: Yes.

[We arrive at daycare. All discussion on the topic ceases. Friends are greeted and playtime is embraced. No evidence of sickness or fatigue. No evidence of being sick and tired, either.]

Paintbrush Fish

Thomas made a great dinner tonight - his new paintbrush fish. Here is the recipe: Brush frozen tilapia filets with a bit of olive oil (hence the name paintbrush fish), add some lemon zest, salt and pepper, squeeze on some lemon juice and then top with lemon slices. Bake at 450 for 18 minutes. Other than the zesting and slicing, Thomas did all the work. He also made rice and broccoli.
